Ok … FINIALLY I’m proud to announce that the next release of LMB^Box FilePress is here! After a terrible incident, I was able to recover / rewrite what was lost and continue on developing FilePress to what it is now. The layout / control page is completely redesigned from the previous release and I’ll be making more design changes for the next release! Most of the big / basic features are finished but a few are still not finished (eg. Move / Copy Folders and Files). The documentation is still sparce but that’s because I’ve been putting all my free time into finishing up this release. I’ve also started to implement localization for FilePress! Currently there is only English, but I will be adding rough translations for some other languages. The next release most likely wont be for quite awhile because of my lack of free time, but I’m planning on keeping up development for FilePress. This is from the readme.txt file in the Change Log section for 1.0 Beta:

As my last post lets in, I’m working for Pomeroy IT Solutions and starting on the 19th of Dec lasting about 2-3 weeks I’ll be extremely busy and out of touch. So to prepare for this up coming event, I’m trying to deliver a very pleasent x-mas present. As you probably know, I’ve been working on updating my LMB^Box FilePress plugin. I won’t be able to finish everything that I would like to , but most features will be there and fully functional! This is great news for everyone that has been waiting for the next release. Now this next release will still be a beta version but hopefully it will hold out until I’m able to complete the last features that needed to be added. Also this next release will be a major code rewrite, so this will also be the testing grounds of the new code base.

I’m also debating on changing the name of the plugin as the plugin has now become WordPress in-dependent … what does this mean … the new code base (which I’ll reference to as “the Script”), is designed and written to run as a stand-alone script that you host on your server and use for file management of your base folder. The Script has an easy to plug-in code that can be used in different PHP scripts out there. Once a stable and feature full version is released, I’ll begin creating plugins for other PHP script systems (eg. Joomla, pMachine, PHP-Nuke, etc.).

Currently, as far as I know, LMB^Box FilePress is WordPress 2.0 compatible using the Failsafe Button feature to add the needed button link. Before releasing this beta version, I’ll test LMB^Box FilePress for WP 2.0 compatiblity again. Right now what I’ll need from everyone who wishes to see this happen is your support. Once the next beta version is released, I’ll need to get as much feedback as I can … on the current features, what you would like to see added in, on bugs / issues / problems, etc. Of course support in ythe form of donations are alwas welcomed and appreciated, they would go to the cost of hosting and my time in order to work on the Script. Finially as I stated above, I would like to change the name of the Script to something more suiting. The Script doesn’t just Publish File Links anymore (File-Press), it allows file management too! If you have any suggestions as to what you think the new name should be, please comment about them here! Also if there are any questions, comments, or other suggestions, feel free to comment here also! One step closer … don’t you say ….

For that last few weeks, I’ve been working on my plugin LMB^Box FilePress but more on that later. More recently I’ve started working some part-time contract jobs for Pomeroy IT Solutions. I’ve done two jobs for them, one on Wed. Nov. 30th and Thur. Dec. 1st of this past week. It’s a pretty good deal for the time being. Currently I’m looking for a full-time job that will be in New York, NY and hopefully after the new year I’ll find a decent one. The contract work is a good thing since it’ll bring in more than I have been, and hopefully it will allow me to be able to take my CCNA again.

Yesturday and today I’ve been setting up my 2 pcs, reinstalling and reconfiguring both so that I can use my Custom Built system again. As I was looking for updates and checking everything out, I decided to take a first look at WordPress 1.6/2.0 so I downloaded it and quick set it up on my local server. I’m liking it very much! Very nice new features and redesign! And taking about new designs, I also got Firefox 1.5 and installed it. WOW! Very nice! All this is just frying my brain!

Lastly comes some info on my plugin LMB^Box FilePress. For the past week, I really haven’t gotten much done since I started the contracting with Pomeroy IT Solutions. Before that I was stuck working on an upload progress bar/monitor for the plugin and I’m also done. I’ve been re-thinking about that though … I’ve found a flash uploader / progress monitor that would look great. But I wanted to have the user have a choice of either full XHTML or Flash interface, plus I still haven’t done the Flash interface that I would like to do … it’s was to be done in the next release after this one. So there are a few more things to take care of, but I’m hoping to finish and release this version before Xmas / New Year.

That’s about it for right now, so until later …

It has been over a month since I posted anything at all and I’m sorry about this. I have been working long and hard on the next release of my plugin LMB^Box FilePress. On top of this, I have been busy with other situations that were surrounding me … so here’s the update:

First of all (just to get it off my dumb ass chest) I royally fucked up BIG time! I’m currently working on someone’s computer for them (fixing it and reinstalling Windows) and it needed a new hard drive. So since I was planning to reinstall my Server, I was going to replace my Server’s current 15GB hard drive with a 20GB one and use the 15GB in this guy’s computer. Last night I cleaned off the 20GB hard drive of any data that I wanted to keep to get it readly for the install this morning. But at the time I didn’t have time to do the same with 15GB hard drive in the Server and told myself that I’d do it this morning BEFORE I started the install. Can you guess what happened? Yep, I forgot about that last, little, non-important step of getting all the data off of the 15GB hard drive before I started the install! And by the time I realized what happened, I had installed the OS on my Server’s new 20GB hard drive and installed the OS on this guy’s new 15GB hard drive!

Right away, I grabbed for the 15GB hard drive to put back in my Server as a slave so that I could run R-Studio NTFS (a program to recover deleted data). I booted up, ran R-Studio NTFS, and found out that *poof* it was useless. Everything was lost! So I just broke down for 4-6 hours today! Since you don’t know what I had on that 15GB hard drive which was the master system drive in my Server before the install, you wouldn’t know why I acted like I did. Now please take the time and re-read the secound sentance of this post and then continue …

YES, that’s what was on the hard drive! My working copy/version of my LMB^Box FilePress plugin! My Server has 2 hard drives, the main system drive and a storage drive (160GB). I installed a WAMP setup on my Server with the web root on my main system drive and I use Dreamweaver on my computer to access the system drive/web root which held all my working web site info / files / plugins. When I realized this, I just flipped! I have put sooo much time and effort into this plugin over the last 2-4 weeks (and made great improvements), that it was just like getting shot.

After all this kicks in, I check to see if I have any backups and the latest on is about 1-2 months old. So I’ve just about lost all my current work! Great! Just F**KING GREAT! At about this time I was down and out for the 4-6 hours today, just doing nothing at all. Finally about 4:00pm or so, I came down and turned on my Server (many things still need to be installed) and computer. During my break down, I thought about if Dreamweaver could have keeped any cache of the files that I lasted opened, but nope. I also thought that Firefox and IE would have the layout and generated HTML pages saved, and to my great surprise they had MORE!

The current working version (next release) of LMB^Box FilePress has changed greatly since the previous version. Now there are only 2 php files, a styles.css file, and a scripts.js file (plus images and some other things that I did have stored somewhere else). So I found out that the styles.css and scripts.js files where cached in both broswers (either would be great) plus I have the main HTML code that is generated by the php files cached as well! What this means … I haven’t lost everything, just the php files. Now those files where the main part of the plugin but with the backup, I should be able to rewrite the code … with some time.

I have been meaning to post some screenshots of what the layout of the plugin will look like and now is the perfect time. Now this screenshots are from cached loads of the plugin and some styles have not been completed yet. Please by all means, comment any questions / concerns / suggestions.

Now on another note, I know that my LMB^Box Comment Quicktags and LMB^Box Smileys plugins are not validating XHTML 1.0 Tradional. So I’m hoping soon I’ll have the time to fix these problems and release new versions. Also, I’m hoping to keep up with and post regularly and more often. On top of all this, this blog needs to be redone and new plugins (SPAM Filtering) installed PLUS this is with my main site www.lmbbox.com. I’ll be very busy but hopefully I’ll make an impact here soon.

I’ve been busy with my finished plugins … updating the code and optimizing their performance. I’m now done! It’s time to release LMB^Box Comment Quicktags 2.0 and LMB^Box Smileys 3.1!

LMB^Box Comment Quicktags version 2.0 plugin has been rewritten into a PHP Class and has had some minor problems fixed. Now the plugin should be optimized for the best performance possible. To find out more info, go the the LMB^Box Comment Quicktags Pluginpage!

LMB^Box Smileys version 3.1 plugin … well, I’ve done it again … released another version of my LMB^Box Smileys plugin within 3 days of the previous one! While I was working on my LMB^Box Comment Quicktags plugin, I came across some more code updates that would optimize the plugin’s performance and clean up the code more. To find out more info, go to the LMB^Box Smileys Plugin page!

I’m not going to be working my LMB^Box FilePress, trying to get it out of beta version! Should have something soon … hopefully!

It really doesn’t look that great in my header right now, but I’m currently working on a new site design for my main site LMB^Box. And once done, I’m hoping to either update my theme here to follow suit or just update some of the graphics and logos … we’ll see what happens. I’m still working on my plugins, mainly the LMB^Box FilePress and I’m looking to have the next release sometime in the next 2 weeks. That’s it for right now … Later!

I have just updated my LMB^Box FilePress plugin to version 0.9 Beta! I’ve just about finished up this plugin with the basic features. There are still some that need to be finished, but most of them are done. I wanted to have this plugin entered into the WordPress Plugin Competition and that is why I’m releasing another beta version that is not completely done yet. There is some basic documentation in the readme.txt file, but once I finish the plugin I’ll be adding more detailed information and instructions! This is from the readme.txt file in the Change Log section for 0.9 Beta:

Almost finish the beta of this plugin!

Added almost all the features.

Delete directory is not done yet!

ToDo: Add file management (rename, resize, delete, etc)!

ToDo: Finish documentation!

For more info, go here.

I’m at a crossroads point in my LMB^Box FilePress plugin for WordPress. I’m calling out for everyone’s input as to what they think/know will be better!

The Problem
Ok. Many of you may know about the problem with file management using PHP. If you use the standard Filesystem Functions that PHP has to upload/create/edit/remove any file(s) on your server, the user/owner for those files is the PHP/Apache user usually something like ‘nobody.’ Once you upload/create a file or directory using the PHP Filesystem Function, you will no longer have any control over the file(s) via FTP or Shell because the you are NOT the Owner of those files/directories. The other option to use is to use the PHP FTP Functions to control the file(s). With this option, you will have to enter in a FTP Username/Password and Path into the plugin in order to use it.

ADDED: I forget to mention that I believe that this only happens with Unix/Linux since it’s soo secure and I believe that under Windows this doesn’t happen/really matter, not sure though …

Which way would you like more? Please let me know soon so I can finish this plugin! Thanks all!
